We promote peace by bringing support and protection to Guatemalan human rights defenders, so that they, in spite of the risks they face, are strengthened in continuing the work they do
Guatemala was the first project in SweFOR’s programme of international accompaniment, and we have had a continuous presence of peace observers in the country since the year 2000. Initially as part of the international accompaniment project ACOGUATE, in which we no longer participate, and since 2021 as an independent project. Thanks to our long, sustained presence in the country, we have extensive contextual knowledge and experience of working with matters related to peace and human rights in Guatemala.
We accompany organisations that work to promote sustainable peace through a commitment to territorial rights, the environment and transitional justice. At present, our focus in primarily on capacity building workshops, in addition to some physical accompaniment and observation, whilst we also conduct advocacy and strategic communication to bring international attention to the situation for human rights defenders in Guatemala.
SweFOR’s office is located in Guatemala city and the project is financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA)
Currently, our staff presence in Guatemala is limited, which means that the scale of our activities is somewhat reduced.
