Corporación Claretiana Norman Pérez Bello (CCNPB)

The Norman Pérez Bello Claretian Corporation (CCNPB) was born in 1997 as the ‘Norman Pérez Bello’ Human Rights Committee, founded to organize human rights and peace work within the Claretian community. They adopt the name in memory of the former coordinator of a basic ecclesial community for the defense of human rights, murdered in Bogotá in 1992, at the age of 25. In 2003, it acquired legal status and autonomy when it was formed as Corporación Claretiana Norman Pérez Bello. Since its creation, it has been committed to a project at the service of victims of violence and peasant and indigenous communities.

The vision of the CCNPB is to contribute to the defense and promotion of life, the care of nature and the environment, and human rights and peoples for the construction of peace with justice, among other causes. Likewise, its mission is to accompany and promote processes of people and communities within the framework of these principles, with transversal activity that includes:
  • Comprehensive psychosocial accompaniment to victims of socio-political violence and human rights defenders at risk.
  • Accompaniment to human rights defenders and peasant and/or indigenous communities in processes of return, land restitution, constitution or extension of reservations, land titling, organizational strengthening, etc.
  • Training and organizational strengthening workshops for peasant, indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities.
  • School of human rights, within the framework of popular education as a generator of critical consciousness.
  • Research on human rights and peace.
  • Spiritual accompaniment with rituals, by the Claretian missions.
  • Support for ex-combatants in their process of reincorporation into civilian life.

 

The Norman Pérez Bello Claretian Corporation works in the towns and regions of Bogotá, Quiba, Soacha, Meta, Vichada, Tolima, Boyacá, Casanare and Chocó. It is one of the few national and international organizations present in the Orinoquía, a complex region with a violent history of armed confrontation, paramilitary presence and violence against human rights defenders.

SweFOR Colombia accompanies the CCNPB since 2017, especially in processes of land restitution and collective reparation. As of September 2020, SweFOR carries out a semi-presential accompaniment to the Peasant Humanitarian Space of Guayabero. Likewise, the CCNPB values that there is a correlation between the legal advances in the first issues and the increase in their situation of risk and that of leaders of the affected communities. As for the international accompaniment, they perceive it as a social and political support, which allows their work to be visible in historically forgotten areas such as the Eastern Plains.
